The model in general

The BMPCC mounts a Super 16 sensor measuring 12.48 mm x 7.02 mm (2.88x crop factor relative to full frame) with an effective resolution of 1920x1080. It is not a photo camera, nor does it pretend to be: it is designed exclusively for video. It records in CinemaDNG RAW (3:1 compression or uncompressed) and Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, and Proxy) at 1080p, with speeds up to 30 fps in RAW and 60 fps in ProRes.

What works

The size and weight are ideal for small rigs, handheld stabilizers, or drones. The camera can be easily mounted on a gimbal and, with a wide-angle lens, delivers very cinematic results.

Connectivity is basic but sufficient: HDMI (mini), USB 2.0, 3.5 mm stereo microphone input, and headphone output. The microphone input has phantom power, something uncommon in this segment.

What weighs with age

The most criticized point of this camera, and rightly so, is the battery life. The LP-E6 battery lasts between 45 and 60 minutes while recording, and less if using the screen at high brightness. It is essential to carry several spares or use an external battery via USB (though the USB 2.0 port limits charging speed).

The screen is another weak point. At 320x480 pixels, it is difficult to judge focus accurately. Many users resort to an external monitor, which adds weight and cost.

The lack of in-body stabilization forces the use of stabilized lenses or working with a tripod/gimbal. It is not a camera for handheld recording without a proper rig.

The autofocus is, as we said, token. It is not suitable for moving video. Anyone coming from a modern Sony or Canon will be disappointed.

Finally, the 2.88x crop factor makes standard photography lenses become very telephoto. A 50 mm lens becomes a 144 mm equivalent. For wide-angle, you need to look for lenses designed for Super 16 sensors or use focal reducers.
